BASKETS
East Indies baskets come in all shapes and sizes, but most share one thing. Many of our baskets were originally designed to be used for practical everyday living-and many are still enjoying that same use today.
Our baskets are woven of rattan, pandan, bamboo, grass and many other renewable fibers. From the smallest oval grass woven box to the waist-high storage baskets, they each express the personality of the makers. Our Spice Island baskets are finely woven in traditional shapes and our Hill Tribe baskets are intricately constructed of split bamboo and lacquer and have hand-painted village scenes of character.
The baskets may have first been designed to hold rice, seeds, fabrics or household goods, but today we collect and admire them for their unique sculptural qualities and the testament they make to the skill of the basket weaver through the centuries.
